Chapter 14

We parked up much closer to the lake than I had with Archie. Firstly, I didn’t know the woods like the back of my hand, and secondly, we were running close to time. It was 7.50 p.m. The clock was ticking.

I grabbed a torch from the back of my car and slung on my somewhat damaged leather jacket. It was cold enough for me to pull on my hat, too. Emory was still in a suit. ‘Are you warm enough?’ I enquired.

I saw a flash of teeth in the dark. ‘Yes, Mum.’

I stuck my tongue out in response. Okay, so he was my client, but for some reason he was drawing out the silliness in me. And besides, he hadn’t signed a contract. At the moment I was being hired by Joyce, not the dragon prime.

I switched on the torch, and we headed down to the lakeside. I expect Emory could have provided us with some floating orbs of light to illuminate our way but that didn’t seem particularly discreet.

Dave was by the lake. Today his dreadlocks were spilling out of a blue bobble hat. He glanced towards me but his eyes didn’t light up with recognition. The mind clearance was still in place. Cigarette butts were littered at his feet; Dave had obviously been here for some time and Dave was nervous.

‘It’s a set up,’ I breathed to Emory as I peered into the shadows.

Suddenly movement burst towards us, unnaturally fast and unnaturally attractive. Vampyrs.

Across the oceans between us, I felt Nate’s awareness of my alarm. Poor Nate – this was the second panic attack in as many days. I barely had time to think, let alone reassure him, because I needed to focus. I didn’t have Gato so I had no access to the Third realm. I didn’t have any weapons, bar a small knife in my boot. As I went to reach for it, my hand detoured of its own volition to my jacket pocket. Glimmer. It shouldn’t be there, but I was grateful that it was.

I wasted no time in drawing and unwrapping it. The last scraps of Mrs H’s lilac skirt fell to the ground just as a vampyr was upon me. Glimmer sang and I felt its fierce joy at being used, being useful. It shot out and sliced the vampyr’s throat with a speed that I couldn’t comprehend. The dagger barely felt any resistance as it bit into his neck. Thick blood sprayed across me but I didn’t have time to be revolted because now there was movement behind me.

I spun on my heel and a second vampyr encountered Glimmer with deadly consequences – though I guess technically vampyrs are already dead. These two were now extra dead. The one standing before me took a moment to realise he’d died again. He blinked twice and looked down at the blood pouring down his body, then he fell to his knees. He raised his hands to his neck and toppled over.

I would probably freak out later but, for now, I needed to stay alive.
